John and Hazel are an ordinary couple. They live in beautiful North Yorkshire with their two children, Amanda, aged 15 and Brian, 13. Hazel teaches in a village school in the Yorkshire Dales and John sells printed circuit boards based at a local company.

New Year’s Eve, 1988 is a mild sunny day so Hazel and the children plan a barbecue for the children’s friends. John leaves them organising the food, to go to his gliding club. He never returns to live in that house again. He has a gliding accident, caused by negligence, that leaves him paralysed from the waist down.

Six months later John is discharged from hospital. By this time, Hazel has put their house on the market, sold it, and moved into a bungalow.

This memoir describes, mainly in anecdotes, how John, Hazel and their two children cope with this life changing event. It is not an easy path, but John’s indomitable courage shines through. He is determined to get as much enjoyment out of life as possible.

This book shows, not only one family’s triumph over adversity, but the kindness of strangers. It is a positive, uplifting memoir.
